Okay, I reckon a lot of people are going to bag me for this review. But I really do not like using the Unreal Engine to make games or mods.
I think it's pathetic. UnrealScript ... meh! I praise Visual Basic more!
I can't explain it exactly to the core. It's like using the force, to understand why the UnrealEngine is bad. One of my tutors brought up the question, what is so different about Unreal? You can do anything in Unreal! Which is true. Unreal Scripting allows you to tweak so many things! And the Unreal Editor allows you to create levels and import 3D meshes of any type.
But tell me why I hate games like BioShock? Why does it have this really weird, distant, but ... same feeling like the Splinter Cell series? Why does it "feel" like Gear's of War?
Perhaps another example, why does Quake 4 ... despite being made by Raven Software (famous for Soldier of Fortune) feels and looks almost the same like Doom 3?
Another Example ... why does the physics in Half-Life 2 looks like it plays out exactly the same as a game like Max Payne 2 or Painkiller.
Furthermore example ... FarCry and Crysis ...
Can you see a relation between the examples I gave? No!!!!! But can you see a relation between the games I gave in the examples? You should if you're not a n00b!!!
That is why I really don't like Unreal. No matter what people say about it being really easy to use, how famous the engine is, and how there are a lot of tutorials/video tutorials to get you started ... it just doesn't change that feeling I dislike. And your game won't be much different compared to Unreal if you decide to use that engine.
I'm not even quite sure whether to say it is a good place to start developing games. Because there is a lot of crap to learn! And if you're not the type of person that likes being taken out of hot water and dipped into cold water (or vice versa) ... you'll probably stick with using this engine (and future versions of it) for the rest of your life.
Find an engine you like if you want to make games. Don't use something you don't like because might discourage you heaps!
Now you may have realised that I haven't actually physically said what I don't like about Unreal. It could very well apply to any of the other engines avaliable in this world and the one's in the games I have used in this thread. But like I said before, it's like using the force to understand why ... and I say that I personally do not enjoy Unreal Scripting or the Unreal Editor.
This has been an OPINIONATED review. Thanks for reading. I don't mean to upset Unreal fans out there!
I'm Done.
