This could actually be tested by putting an audio recording device near a tree that is about to fall, and then going away for a while, and then coming back when the tree has fallen. That way you can test whether or not it makes a sound, for those of you skeptics out there.

Sound only becomes sound once passing through a 'hearing organ', such as the eardrum. Until then, it's merely a vibration in some medium (the ground, the air, whatever).

Thus, if NO ONE is around to hear it, the falling tree merely causes a vibration, not a sound.

I think it does make a sound. But there is no way to prove this question. Not even with a tape recorder; that's tantamount to a person being there to hear it.
