I'm voting Mario, because he will keep fighting until he feels he is weak enough on health to flip between dimentions like he did in Super Paper Mario, and stay there until he is fully healed using his Happy Heart badge(s), then continue the fight until Sonic falls.

Plus he can always end it with Showstopper, or put him to sleep with Sleep Stomp or Freeze him with Ice Smash, and if Sonic hits him, he will take damege with him due to Return Postage. Mario takes the lead.

This isn't a fair match. Not that they would ever fight, but Sonic would win hands down. I love Mario but he has very different and usually weaker enemies to defeat. And if for some reason you go off of both of them in the early 90s, Mario's main attack is to jump ON his enemies, Sonic jumps ON, INTO, BELOW his enemies as a main attack. Both guys rock but Sonic clearly has the upper hand. They are out of each other's element anyway.
