GameTalk Moderator FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions about Moderators)
These are some Frequently Asked Questions as answered by ~Megan~, Axem_Red, catahoula grrr, MSS, Daddy TJ, and Diamond Sword.
How can I become a Moderator?
The best way to become a Moderator is to establish yourself as a community leader in the forums that you're interested in. Developing a great reputation in one forum may allow for a head start in another. If you are actively helpful in forums that already have a moderator, this may increase your chance of being chosen as a Moderator for future forums. For new forums that are just starting to grow, this means being helpful and supportive. It's also a great way to become a co-mod of a forum if the existing mod would like one.
Posting history is very important, but it's not the only reason someone may be chosen to moderate a forum. What we look for the most with regard to posting history is quality. In other words, a person will not be accepted just because they reply to every post in the forum. Again, quantity is important, but quality speaks louder than your post count. As a result, quite a number of visitors are recommended to become a moderator for a specific forum, in part, due to the over-all attitude they display in other GT forums.
Finally, make sure to click the "Apply to be the New Moderator of this Forum" link and put in your application!
What abilities do Moderators have?
Moderators can tag messages for deletion in any forum. Within their forums, Moderators are able to delete messages and if necessary, ban particular users who repeatedly break the rules. You should not be banned for expressing your opinion--if it is done respectfully.
Moderators also have access to view your IP (Internet Protocol) Address, which uniquely identifies each computer that is being used to post messages. IP Addresses are kept from public view and are not knowingly posted publicly at this site. IP Addresses are what is used to ban you from the forum or from the site itself. Name bans are also possible in individual forums only.
Occasionally more experienced moderators are given access to special tools to assist in the administration of the site. These include global banning powers, which enable the person to ban anyone for any amount of time from the site. Mod Assignment Tools are used to do what the name implies; add new moderators. Forum creation tools are used to create new forums for games while the "quicklink" tool is used to change and/or expand the quicklinks which appear on every page of GameTalk.
Who picks the Moderators?
A handful of veteran moderators that have shown themselves to be responsible assist in accepting applications.
Should I apply more than once?
Please, do not apply to become the moderator of a forum more than once unless your screen name or contact information has changed. Doing so could lessen your chances of becoming a moderator.
I want to be a moderator. How will I know where to apply?
You should apply at forum for games you know and love that have an "Apply to be the New Moderator of this Forum" link on them. Being a moderator is not easy; you have to have the time to give it the attention it deserves. Moderators are not chosen for forums they know nothing about, so please make sure you are not applying to a forum just to apply.
Can I apply to become a Moderator of more than one forum?
If you are a visitor to more than one unmoderated forum at GameTalk, you can most certainly apply to be the moderator of those forums. You may not get picked for all the forums and definitely not right away for all the forums, but your interest will be noted.
How do I get chosen to be a second or third (Co-)Moderator of a forum?
Have a great posting history just as in an unmoderated forum. If the moderator of the forum decides they need a co-mod, he or she will ask you if you would like the job. If you accept, then the current moderator will ask for you in the mod forum. A co-mod will be installed pending approval.
Which forums will get Moderators?
Forums which appear on your web browser above and below the forum(s) you attend (otherwise known as quicklinks) are usually the highest priority for moderator placement. Forums that must be located using GameTalk's search function may also get Moderators if it is warranted.
How long does it take for a forum on the Quicklinks to get a Moderator?
It depends upon the forum's popularity and its need for a moderator. Even with the popularity of the forum being high or in some cases low the moderator process still takes time due to the amount of applications that are received.
What If A Moderator Is Picking On Me?
A valid complaint of unfairness shown by a moderator may be posted in the GameTalk Complaints forum. Examples of such unfairness need to be displayed in order for the complaint to be taken seriously. Administrative moderators will be directed to the post and look into the situation and handle it accordingly.
What If I Don't Want Moderators Bossing Me Around?
Moderators are not here to tell you what to do, unless of course you are doing the wrong thing, and they should never boss you around. In fact, all of them are very intelligent, fun people who are great to get to know as friends. For the protection of all of the sites visitors, they will enforce GameTalk's rules of no profanity, spamming, hate messages, ads, and messages about making illegal copies of games and ROMS- and that's all there is to it. So, relax, have fun, and remember to thank your local Moderator!
