The Gametalk Cussing Policy
|
The laws of Gametalk are laughable. While I do not see it once on the site anywhere that cussing is an offense worth banishment, I am still banned for committing such an act. What is the most ridiculous is the fact that, while I can make a Role-Playing post on one of the many forums that allow it about eating a man alive, or perhaps ripping out his intestines and then strangling him to death with them, I cannot say fuck. I can understand this; however, I am not a simple fool who is complaining because he is banned. It can be offensive to someone who has never been exposed to it… Say, a three year old. But then again, if a three year old is intelligent enough to get on the computer and go to Gametalk, then I think they are intelligent enough to not see fuck and go off saying it every five seconds. This is, in a way, similar to the reasons why the video game Grand Theft Auto was protested by; for impressionable acts. However, you have to realize that if some kid is going to see it and say “Wow. That guy on the video game took a bat and beat the living crap out of someone, I better go do it!” he must have been screwed up in the head before he even saw the game. Gametalk should not have a filter for all people, but maybe a filter that catches when someone says a curse word and replaces it with another word. This option can be chosen to be placed on or off by the user. Example; someone says fuck, the filter turns it to freak or feck when the user has it on. When it is off it says fuck. I have seen this done on several forums, so I do think it would be able to be applied. The content allowed upon Gametalk is worse then a simple four letter word. Video games like Grand Theft Auto, Manhunt, and Conker Live and Reloaded all have forums, and all of those games have suggestive themes that might influence a child to… I don’t know, commit suicide for seeing someone get blown into a pool of blood. In this time and age everyone is going to be exposed to it no matter what. It is on Television, it is outside, it is everywhere! The only way someone is never going to hear a cuss word is if they never go outside, lock themselves in their room with no windows and live without any type of item that is connected with the outside. They would need to not listen to music and live without culture, for within those both things that might cause them to gasp in surprise exist, if they have never heard a cuss word that is. At least let the cussing be allowed if it is not used to flame someone. If this is done I can understand someone getting banned, but for getting banned simply for saying fuck is kinda… well, stupid. Perhaps having a policy that allows one to mildly cuss, as long as it is not used in a REAL flaming (As in not two friends making fun of each other) it should be allowed. If someone cusses to much, taking advantage of this law, then action should be taken, but I don’t think someone should get banned for simply saying ‘What the fuck was that?!’. Anyways, I have spoken my beliefs and input would be appreciated, an answer expected.

Kankaro I agree fully. Accept for one thing I would change you should be able to cuss no matter what for crying out loud my 9 cousun cruses and both Joey and Lily of which are 9 know most of the swears my sister started when she was 8 people should not let 6 or 7 year olds on a site that swears and thats why if people were more carefull then the filter would not be needed also hardly any kids come on GT |

Suprisingly, I don't know what scares me more: The fact I just read something that Kankaro wrote... ...or the fact I agree with what he said. Scary. |

First paragraph Yes, I agree. But if you can get away with one thing, then how can you expect to not get in trouble for a second situation, which would be completely different than the first? Second paragraph That situation about impressionable acts, I agree. You would have to be pretty screwed up in the head. Unfortunately, there are such people that would be just like that. So...since some people will in fact do it then no, it is indeed bad and shouldn't be allowed. Third paragraph So, replacing a bad word with something slightly different? Couldn't that be bypassed just as easily? Both the current filter and that filter seems to have the same flaw that allows people to bypass it. But even so, no, you can still replace the bad word yourself with something different. Not many people will have such a limited vocabulary that they wouldn't know how to substitute the f-word with freak or whatever. And even so, it's pretty easy to just not use a curse word at all. Fourth paragraph Well, this is gametalk, not real life. The largest reason, as I see it, for life to have such foul language, is because they cannot stop it. But on gametalk, you can to a certain extent. Just because some bad things from life come into this site, doesn't allow something as trivial as curse words to come in as well. Fifth paragraph How are the mods supposed to differentiate between what should be allowed, and what shouldn't in that circumstance that you suggest? It's easier to use a curse word during flamming, and there is hardly a reason to call a friend something like that. But it's a public forum; what you're saying to a friend will be seen by everybody else. And we can't have that, can we? And they can take it to IM's. And once again, it's hard to differentiate between what is mild swearing and what isn't. The way you suggest would cause too many problems. But anyway...sorry if what I said came out awkward and confusing. I'm tired. =/ |

This has already been discussed in the correct forum: /talk/feedback/79234332.htm Feel free to add on, though I feel most of the arguments have already been made for both sides. |

In respones to Ridifu Omego's response to [S]aint's 3rd paragraph. I think you misunderstood. I think what he was trying to say is that you can set a mode on GT so when someone bypasses the filter that you see the word as another word. It transforms one bad word, into a different word. That's what I think [S]aint meant at least. |

Gametalk has sitewide rules, but forum content dictates the kind of language allowed, as well as the moderator his/herself. If one allows the word to be uncensored for one definition, it can be used for all--you can't have it one way or another. Media outlets use all types of foul language but that doesn't mean this privately-owned site has to advocate the same filth. Quite frankly, anyone who insists on not being a "three-year-old" and isn't "impressionable" can shoulder some responsibility to help make the site family-friendly. Contending to use foul language, like the numerous, unneeded examples already given in the first post? Riff a thesaurus. It's easy to forget that just because some of us are 18+, can buy Mature games, and experience adult things, we still don't want to see more smut and curses than absolutely necessary on the site. |

I almost posted this in Feedback, but Kain said to do it in Q&A. ~_~ I am not 18+, I am thirteen, I have not experianced most of those adult things you speak about, but I am mature enough to see a cuss word and not go crazy. Ridifu, the filter would work in the way that when someone types up a nasty word, it is replaced with a less nasty word if the user viewing the word has the filter on. The curent filter we have pisses me off. Do you know how many 2,000+ Word posts I have made that were deleted because I typed the hell in them? And, because I am kinda busy typing up a post that will most likely be tagged on Jedi Sith, I have only skimmed the posts. Yay for me. |

Let me rephrase that... I am Mature and not as idiotic as most of the people whom the Cussing Policy are supposed to protect to not see a cuss word and be offended. |

wow, you just made it worse. let's put it this way: if you're 13, you're not mature. if you call people idiotic in the same breath as saying "I AM MATURE", you're DEFINITELY not mature. |

Well, if you look at the forums at GameTalk, certain rules are bent more in particular forums with mature themes than more family friendly forums. In some cases, it's not tolerated in ANY form. In others, as long as it's not abused, it's allowed. I see it more as GameTalk being a site for people of all ages, but forums being geared toward particular age and maturity levels. Does that make any sense? x_X |
