Anyone read The Dark Knight Returns? SPOILER WARNING Towards the end, Batman and Superman do actually fight, and through a combination of careful planning, strategy, ingenuity, and a little bit of help from the Green Arrow, Batman beats the living hell out of Superman. |

Batman also carries a piece of Kryptonite on him, since he has major trust issues. Also, the fact that Batman was able to throw down with Superman makes me kind of hate DC. I like my Batman to be just an extraordinary guy, not a super ridiculous power demi-god. |

And actually, Green Arrow has become a far more relatable (and these days, more interesting) character than Batman. Green Arrow is always going to be human, helping to keep the Justice League down to earth as it were. Batman is no longer human, pretty much. |

"Also, the fact that Batman was able to throw down with Superman makes me kind of hate DC. I like my Batman to be just an extraordinary guy, not a super ridiculous power demi-god" If you're referring to their fight in Dark Knight Returns, you might ought to read it again. He is far from a demi-god like Superman. Like I said, he fights Superman the way Batman would fight Superman: with his smarts. He still doesn't have any powers or anything. Also, the speech he delivers while pummeling Superman is one of the best examples of Batman's barely latent and extremely awesome psychopathy. I really, really love that arc. |

*** possible Spoiler warning*** It's been a while since I read this one, but wasn't there a part where Batman feigns death (heart gives out or something) and gets buried? He needed to fool everyone in order to make a comeback, because he suspected that the corruption went all the way to the highest governments (authorities) in the land? Yeah, during their fight, Batman was telling us (via his thoughts) how Superman had always been pretty much a boyscout, whereas Batman had to be a detective, training his mind, in conjunction with rigid regimen of physical training, to be the hero he was (basically no super powers). That, and the fact that Clark always had family to support him while growing up and never could get detached enough to be a thorough detective-type, like The Batman was, too. Superman was too trusting and would do almost anything the upper authorities told him to do... which Batman thought was going to lead to the two of them colliding like this eventually. Yup. Great arc. I'd say it's right up there with "the long halloween" and "hush" ones. |

I do remember that. I guess I'm more referring to recent/current DC comics stories and just the overall fact that Batman is considered just as powerful (not physically or powerwise) as Superman. DC likes to turn their characters, even human ones, into mini-gods, and Batman has been a victim of their god-out phase in the past decade. I also have a bit of a problem with Superman's representation in The Dark Knight Returns, but that's another story. It's certainly a good story, but I have felt it's been pretty overrated over the years. Also, I can barely stand Frank Miller. |

If Batman can have kryptonite, then Superman can have a mega-gun. A gun that explodes MEGA when it hits it's target. |

Superman would still logically win out against Batman, I think. It just isn't that much of a story for Superman to pwn Batman like he should. :T |

I think the other thing people tend to forget is that while Batman is incredibly intelligent, Superman is no dummy either. He is pretty trusting, and it is a flaw, but he isn't the tool that Miller made him out to be. Also, Iron Man could probably make a pretty awesome armor to take out Superman. I mean, he has an awesome suit to take on the Hulk. But Marvel characters versus DC characters is sort of lame. DC tends to god-out their characters, and Marvel's characters are more down to earth, more flawed. |

DC tends to publish and support darker more adult comics than Marvel. All of Marvel's superheroes have basically the same backgrounds and all have the same generic conflicts. To me, it's far from the mature comic book writing that people tend to think it is. Meanwhile, a lot of Batman's DC arcs, especially in the modern era, are very complex and bleak. They're responsible for Neil Gaiman's Sandman series, which is some of the best comic book storytelling of all time. They published Watchmen, which is THE most thoughtful commentary on the superhero genre ever made, in addition to being supremely entertaining. And they have the Vertigo imprint, which is responsible for some of the greatest modern day comic series of all time, including, but not limited to, Transmetropolitan, Preacher, Hellblazer, V For Vendetta, Y: The Last Man, and Paul Pope's fantastic short cyberpunk story, 100%. In the end, I think DC has done tons more towards taking comics to the level of a serious artform than Marvel ever has. |

No doubt that Vertigo has been one of the best things DC has ever done. That said, the past 10 years of Batman has been extremely pitiful and unnotedworthy (save maybe some of Brubaker's stuff). Other than the occasional Batman story though, DC's mainstream superhero comics almost seem way more jokey than Marvel. But then, Marvel also has Ed Brubaker and Warren Ellis, and those guys really know how to write a good story. |

Well super man's main fighting flaw against most marvel characters and some DC characters is that he doesn't ever at any time use the full potential of his power. He just sort of floats there with his arms crossed all "Seriously, your gonna fight me. I am super man, this can only end one way" which is when said person superman is refusing to use any full power on starts to pwn him with itelligence, a trick, threats, or the usual kryptonite. |

Yeah...actually I pretty much agree with you, Sufjan. And I will admit, as much as I like comics, I don't care nearly enough about superhero comics to have a real adamant opinion about them. The only superhero that ever really appealed to me was Batman, and as you say, his past 10 years have been real lame. I'm sure you're aware of Frank Miller's "All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder". Completely ridiculous. "What are you retarded? I'm the God-damned Batman!" I stand firmly behind Frank Miller's "Year One" and "Dark Knight Returns", but I think he's completely lost it. The last truly great Batman series I read was The Long Halloween. That's been, what, 11 or 12 years? |
