Tip for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Getting Umbra Sword early and easy.
This tip is currently ranked 5.0 out of 5 by a bunch of voters.

I normally go after Umbra's Sword early in the game because I usually keep it for it's soul trap abilities for most of the game. Here's what I do and I've done it successfully several times.

At the very beginning of the game I start building up my money 'You need around 6500 gold' by making and selling potions and stealing and selling everything I can with out getting caught.

Then I go to The Three Brothers Trade Goods in Imperial City and talk to Segguis Verus, 'his brother won't sell it to you' and buy the Akavari Sunderblade. This blade will Disintegrate Armor and Weapons 100 pts.

I then go to Rindir's Staff in Imperial City and buy the staff Apotheosis. This staff does 33pts Fire, Frost and Shock damage with each hit. That's 99 pts of damage.

I then travel to the Ayleid ruin of Vindasel. Save before you enter in case you need more then one try at this. After you've done it once, even if you fail, the next time is much easier.

After entering the ruin, approach Umbra. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT talk to her. If you do she will attack first and you job just got 200% harder.

As quickly as you can hit her 3-4 times with the Sunderblade. This will make her weapon and armor useless.

Then again as quickly as you can, hit her 3-4 times with Apotheosis. This will kill her.

I've done this several times and it seems that the lower you character level, the better. I've done it at Level 5 twice.

By the way so I'm not stealing someone else's thunder. I read about this tactic on another forum right after the game came out. So I've been using it and passing it along in this forum.

Good luck. Hope it works for you.

i've not tried this tip, but i just simply stock up on health potions and dance around her with a dagger and keep on hitting her back, works for me :P

I think the reason Dragonfly ask me to post this tip is because a lot of people don't know that it's easier to go after the sword at lower levels instead of waiting to get the sword when you do its quest. To do the quest you have to be level 20.

Hey if you guys are offing her with a dagger and normal tactics, good for you. Great job. But for those who don't know, here's a few stats on Miss Umbra.

She is a level 50 Bosmer with 394 health points and can heal herself at the rate 2pts per second. She has 100 Speed, 100 Strength, 100 Endurance and all her combat skills are max out at 100. ref: uesp.net/wiki

Also if you wait until you get the quest, as soon as you enter her area she attacks and she is very very fast. If you go before you get the quest, then you can get in several attacks before she reacts.

The first time I played, I went for the sword after I got the quest. If I remember right, I had to reload my saved game 5-6 times and must have used up 1/2 dozen healing potions.

For what it's worth, by doing it the way I have suggested, you not only end up with Umbra Sword, but also IMO two of the best weapons in the game. Sunderblade and Apotheosis.

Anyway, regardless of how you do it, your best shot is do it before you get the quest.

Good luck.

But it has always been posted as a REPLY. I was looking for it for a friend the other day and I went through the Tips and Best Tips sections to find nothing.

I asked him to post it as a tip(see my post below this one) so that I could get my hands on it when I needed to or I could point others to it and all that.

Yes, it is sort of a newbie tip, but for some reason, there isn't a tip about it that I can find. There was a dozen of them before the integration of the individual fora into the Multi-Forum, but when they were merged, we lost a lot of posts from each forum for some unknown reason. That's why there are only 2 multiforums at the moment. He wants to look into the bugs a little deeper before do it to a lot of the other cross-platform games. ;o)
