How about you take a look at the system processes in task manager. Which is using most CPU? It may just be the system Idle process.

Ha ha. I wonder how many calls tech support gets about this.

“I’ve been monitoring my computer’s CPU usage.”

“Okay, explain to me, first of all, what it is that’s compelling you to sit at your computer doing absolutely nothing but watching its CPU usage?”

Ferret, how long have you had this computer? Are you sure you’re just not observing symptoms to a problem that’s only in your head? Some people get too concerned about their equipment, when it’s really in perfect condition. CPU spikes are normal results of processes requiring, well, processing. I’d be much more concerned if your computer’s processor stopped working. Don’t be a hypochondriac for your computer. ;)

I bet when you start using your laptop (and stop sitting at task manager) the CPU usage will go down. This is because processes in the backround start working hard when your not using your computer, hence the reason the CPU spikes when you monitor it :P
