Why are so many people homophobic?
|
I am wondering this because, in my old school, if an adult heard you say a homophobic word to someone else, they would most likely not act upon it. If you used a racist word, however, you could face being suspended. Are racism and homophobia not simply two ways of discriminating against people, and therefore not so different from each other? I know in the UK, racism has declined dramatically over the past 30 years, so will homophobia decline like this? Please add any thoughts on the matter

Homophobia is a strange thing, as I see it. That is because it is often caused by a self-compensation for the "flaws" a person, usually a man, sees within their self. For instance, I have often found that the men with the most ardent hatred of homosexuals are more than probably gay themselves. Not to say this is always the case, but I have seen it more than once. This is why it is strange. Homophobia is not a condition generally based upon usual reason, or rational anger. Other assumptions and generalizations of hatred (Xenophobia, antisemitism, anti-Caucasion, etc), are more external. That is, they are usually perpetuated by physical beliefs, such as an African American being lazy, or a White person being overly nervous about every situation. Rather, I have found that when dealing with homophobia, things hit more closely to home because homophobic people, in my opinion, tend to be angry at the thing that lies within their disposition; homosexuality. So, to be more concise, homophobia is so popular because people easily see homosexuality within their own selves. This is the same reason why, for instance, the Wolf Man is so scary. People are afraid of the animalistic tendencies in their own character, and are even more fearing of becoming overly aggressive and rambunctious; like an animal. As the Wolf Man epitomizes this same, angered animalism, many are afraid of him, because he is, in fact, them (Or at least the part of them that they fear). This is the same fear that lies as the basis for homophobia. People are afraid of homosexuality, because it is within them. They are afraid that if they show the slightest sign of it, then they will automatically feel the same, supposed "dishonor" and "disapproval" of being gay, which they ironically condone. They condone it in a form of compensation, where they feel that if they hate homosexuality more, then no one will suspect that they may have the most minute trace of it, in themselves. So, when people think that they hate gays, a person will not be suspected of being so. And if they are not, then they will being perfectly "approved" in a society, where being gay would be far easier if those same people did not feel the need to compensate for their own "homosexual flaws," by spreading slander and hatred against gays. (Though homosexual traits are not imperfections, in my opinion, but simply aspects of a person). To go on, annoyingly, I will use another example. It is a common fact that many, elementary school bullies are only so mean because they want to hide their weakness. Though being gay is not a weakness, it is a similar idea, that I will not explain once more. Homophobic people will probably insist on using "facts" to perpetuate their hatred. "Gays cause AIDS," or, "Gays destroy the good, American home," or, "Gays express their lust in public." Much if this, as I see it, is but slander, made from the wishful thinking of the hate-filled. They insist on using assumptions and irrational stereotypes, as though they were fact. Many homophobic ideals are easily arguable, and disproven. For instance, they say that Gay parents will only raise gay children. And yet, those gay parents were raised by supposedly straight people. So, if straight parents can raise gay people, then gay parents can raise straight children. Simple as that. These arguments are, in my opinion, only justifications for hatred, and are therefore void, as far as my idea of debate is concerned. Could homophobia lessen, in years? Of course; people need only have greater understandings of these "vial" things that they fear (Since not all homophobia, of course, comes from self hatred. Some of it is simply disgust, from a lack of understanding of the actions. But, I wont go into this further, since I spent so much time on the first idea). Various other forms of hatred have even been seen as archaic, in this modern age. Will homophobia follow? Only time can tell. |

In some cases it'll be that they hate the idea of a man finding them sexually attractive. Sports guys are probably fine being naked in a locker room/shower room with fellow sporting heterosexuals. But having gay men there?!?!? What if they try to check you out!!??!?!?! EWWWW!! Usually the men who think they're Gods gift to women and that all women want to shag them, then all gay men would want to shag them too and it'll make them very uncomfortable. |

Right now gay people are the ones doing a lot of fighting for their rights, not unlike the movements black people had in the 1900's. People will be more keen to call someone a "fag" rather than "nigger" because, I think, anyone can actually be gay, whereas calling someone a derogatory term for a black person is stupid, because...well...they may not be black. It's not a good idea to think it will pass, even though I wish it would. But people will always have one reason or another to hate another group of people. All we can do is do our best to try and make the hating group smaller. |

I personally have no problem with homosexuals,as long as they understand, quite clearly, that I am not interested. I actually have a couple of gay friends, and they're hilarious. I don't agree with their views, but that's their business, not mine. The one thing that I can't stand is when people randomly call people gay, just because they don't like something about them. If you're wearing a stupid-looking shirt,it makes you gay. If they think you're annoying,it makes you gay. If you can't play sports,it makes you gay. I'm sure everyone knows what I'm talking about... |

It isn't Cassius. You make that choice, not part of some sort of Phobia, but simply out of knowing who you want to keep close to you, as friends. I can not say I would do the same, but I don't think it's homophobia. |

I've never found that "if you're a homophobe, you're homosexual" thing to be true. I live in the South, and everyone who hates gays just hates them. : / |

The problem is that people don't know how to deal with the problems. I personally would drop all funding from my children if they ever did something like that. Again don't give them any jobs or any money. Today I went to the beach and to see two healthy young men run around is a sad sight. I don't mind them at the work place. I prefer them then guys taking all the tight pun tang. Still don't higher them and don't fund them. Find a reason to fire them but know that if they are Twsiturny battery rammers or straight. Then two fatty ugly women walking around the place. Then again we all knew they were like that from they was young. No really the phrase "your my Hotdog bun" makes me wonder what is run with this world. |

Do you think that perhaps homophobia originates from religious beliefs? I'm not anti-religious or anything, but I have a friend who is a Jehovah's Witness; and he spouts all this bullsh!t about gays and stuff. Whenever he says stuff about it, its just like he's quoting something from someone else; as if the words have been repeatedly drilled in. (no pun intended) He also frequently quotes things from the bible to 'back up' his case. It's just a thought, not saying it's right or anything. |

Religion is definately the problem. All these "Major" religions claim to be agents of a higher power to lead you into an afterlife of paradise, that their main cause is to save man from an eternity of never-ending pain and suffering; that they only care about the afterlife and getting you there, yet what they really want is power in THIS world, they start their materialistic conquests by creating lists of sins that are merely our human nature, to make us all feel guilty of just being alive, and once you're sedated enough to actually beleive the shit they spew, they then tell you to spread the brain-washing (which they inspire thorugh fear and hate) by bullying people who didn't conform to the imaginary boundaries of such cumpulsory religions. They done this to other religions, they've done it to other ethnic groups, they've done it, and are still doing it to homosexuals. The idiocy must end. |

Racists and homophobes add diversity to society. So if you like diversity you should approve of racists and homophobes. |

As much as it pains me to say it, being a Christian, you're right. Religion is the problem. I'm not sure if God doesn't approve of homosexuality. Those texts could easily be God-breathed as they could be the prejudices of the man who wrote it. But, according to my beliefs, I understand that it doesn't matter. Everyone falls short of God. We're all sinners. Christians are so stupid that they don't realize that they're pushing people away rather than bringing them closer. If someone wants to be gay, fine. Respect him/her as a human being. |

The problem is the sex part and that is it. If is good to be a little flowerly but anything else is just wrong. Remember the good days of Multi colors, elements, being united as one light and when we walked around with triangles on our shirts to go to the Gym. That is the second problem they took part of our culture also. Lastly the next problem is that they are continuesly trying to be seperate. It is okay to be flowerly or a femeini man. It is okay to Cross Dress and talk like a woman. Heck it is okay to have boob implants and have a beard. It is even okay to joke around gay ideals with a person with the same gender as a joke. It is okay to bath with somebody of the same Gender and play around in a tub or be close to them. IT IS JUST NOT OKAY TO SLEEP WITH ANOTHER PERSON WITH THE SAM GENDER AND CONSIDER IT THE EQAUL TO ENJOYING THE COMPANY OF A PERSON OF THE OPPOSITE GENDER. It is okay for two women to have a sexaul relationship. JUST AS LONG AS THEY LOOK SEXY AND NOT PUGLY. Again IT IS JUST NOT OKAY TO SLEEP WITH ANOTHER PERSON WITH THE SAM GENDER AND CONSIDER IT THE EQAUL TO ENJOYING THE COMPANY OF A PERSON OF THE OPPOSITE GENDER. And IT IS NOT OKAY TO BE SOMEBODY IN MARRIAGE OF THE SAME GENDER. The fact that even under law it is only under law. If you want to get Married then get married. |
