Is seeking truth above comfort a form of comfort?

I'm starting to be inclined towards thinking so. For a few years, I've had a few religious-type urges that I've largely ignored, because their "truth" was given up millenia ago. But the more I see of what the ideas of Science and Rationality have become, the more I'm convinced that people seek the ever-elusive Truth to comfort themselves. Against what? Well, for a start: The idea that any facet of reality can be explained multiple ways. A form of comfort against subjective emotion and thoughts by looking at a situation "objectively". Comfort against the idea that perhaps there are things that are currently unexplainable, and that there will always be things unexplainable. (no, not God, he's plenty explainable -- just look around you!) Comfort that one is serving a higher meaning, the Pursuit of Truth, so as to not be concerned about one's own eventual extinguishment. Comfort that one is thinking for oneself and not following blindly-- although strangely enough, most "freethinkers" follow the same exact line of reasoning, take up similar ways of disregarding or explaining away things different from their own views, etc. And above all: Comfort that one is not doing something just because it's comforting.Thoughts?
