The EU is annoying (spoilers for various EU crap)
|
I realize this forum is completely dead, but if I posted this in J/S I'd just get a bunch of sex jokes. And I really need to rant. Why is it that the EU has to cling to some safety net? The authors are so damned afraid to try something new. The NJO was NEW. It explored new things such as new enemies, finally no Empire, and themes (Traitor, anyone?). Sure, it repeated itself a lot- what with a new Jedi Conclave every other book (it did have like fourteen books or something), but at least it was delving deeper into the characters. At least they had the guts to kill off characters. But, now what? They're back to being little children again. Han is what? 70 years old? And he's still fighting? isn't it time to kill him off? One of his sons died, and another one is probably about to die, but they can't kill him off? According to comments made by Boba Fett in the Legacy series, human commonly die at around a hundred. That's fine. I can live with that- even if it is ridiculous. What I can't live with is murdering the personality of Han Solo instead of murdering the actual character. The guy fires stun bolts. He hasn't killed anybody sense the NJO, as far as I know (unless bugs count). Apparently the whole "Han shot first" crap bugs the authors, considering they reference it in every book, but they don't have the guts to have Han kill someone themselves? Gimmie a break. Another thing that bugs me- Kyp Durron. Comments made by Luke Skywalker and Lumiya indicate he is VERY powerful (he was the only non-Skywalker considered to be turned into a Sith by Lumiya and Vergere), yet they NEVER use him. I was so excited when Luke told him to come up with a plan for Jacen, yet he didn't even fight him! I would have LOVED to see that fight- even if Kyp had no chance of winning- just because the character could be used! Throughout the NJO he never had a good fight scene out of a starfighter. Instead they give it to ridiculous character like Corran Horn (who has the same personality as virtually every other Jedi ever). I can understand for a fan to not like Kyp, but the authors can't paint this picture of him being all powerful and have him sit on the side=lines. It's ridiculous. OK. Sorry if that rambled. These two things just frustrate me everytime I read a book. : /

1) Have you even READ Revelation? If so notice this: at NO point during the novel do we even follow Luke, Han, or Leia. It's almost always Ben, Jaina, Boba, or Jacen. Also, they showed Luke's Force ghost in the Legacy comics. What am I getting at? It's very simple. They're trying to ween the fans of the Big Three. After the backlash from killing Chewie, it's really no surprise. This way, we're all used to the idea. So when one of them really DOES die, we can all mourn, but won't necessarily storm Lucasbooks with torches and pitchforks. It's a GOOD thing that Han Luke and Leia haven't been up to much. It's given Ben Jacen and Jaina time to shine. (btw, yes, Killiks DO count) 2) Eh, I've never cared for Kyp that much. Besides, he had his time to shine in the NJO and DNT, LotF is all about the Skywalker/Solo clan. It's about close, personal battles, and Kyp is neither close nor personal. Note also that Saba, Kyle, Corran, and even Zek have had their roles shrunken a fair amount. 3) Read the first three X-Wing books and "I, Jedi" to get a better feeling for Corran Horn. He is certainly not "every other Jedi." 4) The "Han Shot First" referances are most likely what we call "fan serive." They're probably not making a statment, rather they're making fans smile. Just like Karen's last two LotF books referencing "It's a Trap!" |

I have to admit.......I would probably skip schol to grieve if Han, Luke, or Leia died. Seriously. It happened to be a weekend when I was reading and Chewie died.........it really hurt. I guess it just goes to show what a brilliant universe George Lucas has come up with. If people can HONESTLY feel saddened by the death of a character, well, more power to him, and to the fans.......... |

...I never said I had a problem with not having Han, Leia, or Luke. I said I had a problem with Han- when he does appear- being a complete pansy. I get what you're saying, but if they are going to do it... Hurry up. : / Unfortunately, the Skywalker and Solo kids are completely unlikable. I LIKED that Jacen was going to be a rouge type Jedi. That interested me. He's boring now. If it could be believed that he's actually brining peace by being a Sith, that could be interesting. But, they murder that fact because they're scared fans will get whiny like they did with Vergere in the NJO. Jania is a stock female character- like Mara. She's tough. She doesn't need a man. She's boring. Ben is starting to grow on me, somewhat. He was definitely annoying in the beginning of Legacy, but now he's stepping up. I still don't like him very much. I'm not whining that Kyp isn't featured enough. I'm whining that when Kyp is featured, his supposed strength isn't shown that much. But, I suppose you're right- he was featured in NJO. He just didn't get a single lightsaber battle, which is depressing. I've read I, Jedi. It was a very, very good book. Too bad since then the character is- like virtually every other Jedi excluding Luke, Kyp, Kyle, and maybe a tiny few others- completely boring. Maybe it IS because the Skywalker and Solo clans are being featured more prominently, and the others are just fading into the background, making them blend together. But the idea of other characters besides Skywalkers being heroes, like in NJO... It's way more interesting because it's new. I haven't seen hardly any new material in Legacy. |
