Ben 10, Race Against Time
|
Now this one was a nice little sleeper. It didn't appear from the advertizing that this one was going to be very good at all. Surprise, surprise, it wasn't half bad. In fact, it was pretty good. The storyline started and played out well all the way through. Some things were fairly predictable if you have watched the cartoon series very much. The story kind of takes off where the cartoon series ends(figuratively) as it were and takes the story into real time rather than a long road trip where some alien force is trying to destroy/take over the earth. This brings it all home and ties it up in a neat little bundle. The graphics were pretty darn good for a made-for-TV movie. There were just as good as practically anything on [teevee] tody. It won't stand with multi-million dollar movies, but they were much better than I thought they were going to be. The acting could have been better on the kid's part, but they had a very well seasoned cast otherwise. The kid's weren't bad, but they were not great either. I'm going to mark that up to sheer inexperience and let it go. I'm not going to trash anyone on their first big job when it was clear that they did their best. All in all, not a bad flick in the least. If you like the cartoon series, then you will love the movie. Even if you know nothing about the cartoon, it tells the backstory in bits and pieces throughout the course of the movie. I gave it a 7 at first, then bumped it up a notch because the folks at C/N really tried to do it right with this one. The world may never need the help of Ben and the Omnitrix again, but it is kind of nice to know that he will be there if it does. It's going to be on a million times so if you missed it, don't worry, you will have plenty of opportunity. ;o)

There were a few things that bothered me about the whole movie: 1. The kids' acting, as you said, was pretty bad. But, then again, they ARE kids, and it's a cartoon-made movie, where everything has been said before. 2. The 'fighting' was a throwback to the original Power Rangers. Completely ruined some parts of the movie. 3. The CGI was horrible for Wildmutt, but at least the rest were decent. 4. They portrayed Grey Matter wrong, in my opinion. His voice was much different, and he seemed to be EXTREMELY hyperactive, which isn't the case in the actual show. I could see him acting like a squirrel, saying 'Get nuts, get food. Get nuts, get food. Get nuts, get food.' [javo] |

It wasn't fantastic, but it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be...it was watchable, and I enjoyed quite a few parts. The biggest problem is the actor...he is NOTHING like the character in the cartoon. |

I loved the Grey Matter sequence. That is just how I picture a Superhyperactive Nerd hopped up on caffiene and sugar getting sweet revenge would be. Yes, he was a lot different from the cartoon, but I thought that his character was better portrayed this way. I agree 100% about Wild Mutt, but the Grey Matter and Diamond Head sequences more than made up for it in my opinion. Like I said, I gave it an extra point simply because they really did try to get it right. Even though they missed the mark a bit, they really did try and it shows. ;o) |

Grey Matter was my favorite in the show because of his attitude, so that's why the movie ruined it. D: [javo] |

I watched it again last night and I think that Grey Matter was portrayed to a tee even more than I did before. That scene just had me howling with laughter. My wife came in to see if something was wrong, she coldn't tell if I was laughing or maoning in pain. She thought that I had fallen again or something. *laughz* I'm sorry Javo, dude, we are just going to have to agree to disagree and let it go. I agree with you on almost every other point, but come on, that scene was too funny, especially since he was trying to dial in Four Arms. Then the sheer disappointment in his voice until he realised that "hhmm, maybe I CAN work with this" and then commenced operation Automated Food Fight. Just listening to his hyperactive mumblings is hilarious in itself. Watch it again and turn up the sound a notch or two during that scene and listen to the things that he is saying. He's talking to himself like there are two of him throwing ideas back and forth. *laughz* I chuckle just thinking about it. Give it another try and see if you like it any better. It won't hurt nothing, right? Think about it anyway. ;o) |

I know he was talking to himself, but that's what kinda ruined it for me. I always loved how Grey Matter broke that particular stereotype that mad geniuses talk to themselves! Either way, we must agree to disagree...It is all in perspective. [javo] |
