Does anyone else agree with me on this?
|
Most Zelda fans are spoiled, indecisive, and whiny. Before you all get your panties in a bunch, hear me out. Almost every single entry in the Zelda franchise is a masterpiece, with the rare exception here and there. However, I've noticed some common traits amongst Zelda fans; those being that which I listed above. Nintendo listens to it's fans, and yet whenever they try and do something different, they're met with criticism. Conversely, when they stick with the tried and true, they're also met with criticism. Take Wind Waker, for example...now, I know a lot of people really enjoyed that game, but there's some that whine about it being a departure from the series norm. So, with the next major installment in the series, Twilight Princess, Nintendo went a different route. With some innovation here and there, they threw together an epic, yet familiar package that should have satisfied anyone who calls themselves a Zelda fan. Yet while gaming magazines and critics everywhere showered it with praise, I've noticed something different on the internet. Complaining. Either it's "too similar to previous games", "too easy", or some other reason, and it sickens me. So , you're going to complain about a Zelda game that 's too similar to past entries after complaining about a Zelda game that took the series in a different direction? What's that crap all about? Now, don't get me wrong here; I'm not out to antagonize all of you. I know that this does not apply to everyone, but I'm just going by what I have witnessed firsthand. If it applies to you, that's a different story. I've heard an increasing amount of complaints about how the series is "getting old", particularly in searching for information regarding the next Zelda. Anyone who says such a thing is an idiot. Sure, a lot of the Zelda games boil down to an inevitable conclusion, a lot of 'em feature the same characters (or variations), and a lot of them share many core aspects of the Zelda formula. If these things were taken away, people would complain. So why in the name of Nayru, Farore and Din would you complain now about those aspects remaining?! The last Zelda game to be released, Phantom Hourglass, featured a heaping helping of innovative touches, such as touch-screen only controls and puzzles that would only be possible with the DS hardware, the ability to customize your ship with a pretty good number of different parts, wireless multiplayer via Wi-Fi, et cetera. And people still don't seem to be satisfied. Here's a trend I'm starting to notice; With Zelda, Nintendo seems to release a conventional title, followed by a more non-conventional title - for example, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass - et cetera. And yet people complain about the lack of fresh content, or they complain when they receive the fresh content they were yearning for. The Zelda franchise is chock-full of masterpiece games that I'm sure many, including myself, have very fond memories of. Personally, I treasure the familiar feeling that each manages to evoke, while offering new gameplay mechanics and a new tale to sink my teeth into. I probably shouldn't care about the people complaining, when I can ignore them and enjoy the games as they were meant to be enjoyed, but it irritates me to hear "fans" of the series piss and moan about this and that when they can't make up their minds.

I agree with you on most parts, but I think Wind Waker was a bit off the Zelda series. DON'T GET ME WRONG I loved the game. IT just didn't seem like a zelda game to me. |

You're entitled to your own opinion, of course. I'm speaking in particular about the type of people who complain simply because they don't like the new features. It irks me, because if the game DIDN'T have anything new, they'd complain about THAT. |

I don't know what you mean by "spoiled" it's not like we're getting these games for free. If I'm paying $30 - $50 for a game I would like for it to be good. I can see defending The Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess had some good aspects, but why Phantom Hourglass? For a Zelda game it was pretty bad. Given the touchscreen controls were nice, but it doesn't matter how well you can control your character if the game itself sucks. It had no good music, the story was bad, it made you return the the temple of the ocean king way too many times (i.e. more than once), and the sailing sucked(and I actually liked the sailing in TWW). |

I pretty much agree with everything Deospawn has said there, it's about time someone told all the complainers to shut up. Goodness me, can you imagine people playing videogames in the early ninties being handed Twilight Princess and then complaining that it was 'too easy'? No, they'd be in awe for months, and when they'd finally regained enough control in their jaw they'd ask us how the heck such amazing game worlds were lovingly created and implimented, and why we fail to appreciate the age we live in. Also, about which games are better: Anyone noticed how when a new game in a series comes out that pretty much no'one claims it to be the 'best one yet', rather, they say 'great, but not quite as good as'? I bet some people are even now comparing Mario Galaxy to 64 and saying that. The bottom line is, nostalgia is a power emotion, and it has a tendency to warp our perception at times. For my mind, TP was by far the best Zelda game, regardless of whether 00T is harder, you could say that just makes the former more accessible, some people were unable to finish OOT or see all of it, not everyone has ten hours to sit down and play videogames everyday. TP offered an unrivalled sense of freedom, even now I gallop on Epona through the beautiful fields, between the valleys, awestruck at the sheer scale of it all. Epic doesn't begin to describe the feeling. You ever switched to first person on horseback over the Lake Hylia Bridge, and slowly turned full circle, taking in the twinkling, haunting surface of the water miles below, to the stretching, barren wasteland of Gerudo Valley, to the twisting and turning pathways leading to your position, and if you look just right, the faint glimpse of Hyrule castle beckoning just beyond the horizon. That alone defines nearly everything I ever wanted from a Zelda game. Do you think if TP had been released late 90s with OOT graphics, then OOT had been released a year ago with TP graphics that everyone would still say Ocarina was better? Fast forward thirty years and we'll probably be playing Zelda by being Link, where every move we make is duplicated by him, and it will feel real, yet even then we will probably be complaining. The point is enjoy what you have, because we've been blessed by some of the finest creations to inspire the imagination yet. At their best, games are very much to be the artwork of the modern world. Anyone can draw on their knowledge of the mundanity of this reality, just pick up a copy of Medal Of Honour with it's seventy two shades of mud-brown and blood-red and you'll see what I mean. Pick up a copy of Mario Galaxy or Twilight Princess and experience the finest of inspiration and creativity the technological world has to offer. |

I'll agree with the majority of this post. However, a quick word on TP-bashing. The fact is that by delaying TP for over a year, Nintendo raised the hype even more than it already was, and thusly assured two things: One, that they would sell a ton of copies, and Two, that people would be let down. With all that time to wait, hope, and imagine, people were expecting the single, unquestionably best video game of all time. Same thing happened to Halo 3. Both good games, but they simple COULDN'T live up to the hype. Also, those who complain (like myself, I admit) about TP being too easy are often tricked by their own skill. Between OoT and WW, and then between WW and TP, people got better. Those whose first Zelda game was OoT probably found WW too easy, and the same thing applies here. At least in part. Now, I'm not claiming to be particularly 1337, but I got through TP, my FIRST TIME without dying once, in under 39 hours of play. That's too easy. When ~Ganondorf~ can only do a heart and a half of damage, that's too easy. Even assuming that I improved 100% since my first time through WW, I should have died twice. As Zelda games go, it WAS an easy one. That being said, I love TP. But it's only my fourth favorite Zelda game. Also, I think people SHOULD complain and criticise. The reason there's such a high standard is because the fans won't accept anything less. If we didn't complain, Nintendo wouldn't HAVE to make their games any good. The hotter the fire, the stronger the steel. I'm as much a Zelda fan as anybody. That's why I complain about what I find lacking. I love the series, and I want it to always be the absolute best it can be. Some games simply don't quite live up to the standard all the time. TP was a bit too easy, MC was just plain WEIRD, etc. WW, OoT, ALttP, each of them has flaws. If we don't point them out, we're letting the series down. Blind love of a series is just foolishness. |

My biggest gripe with TP was its difficulty. I know they were trying to rope in more casual gamers, but they could have easily pleased both crowds with difficulty levels(like in Metroid Prime 3). |

the reality is, this is how it is for any any franchise or developments made by corporations. people will always critisize no matter what they do. there is no game that can be made without faults, becuz people are the ones who create the faults thru their constant critisism.... itll always be, and its usually more or less depending on the popularity of the franchise. zelda is very popular. critics will be there. |

Listen. I agree with anyone who though that WW was waaaay off-the-seires, but a zelda game is a zelda game. Sure, TP was kindof like past games, but it doesnt matter. as i said in another post, you are limeted with a sword, a sheild, and various other contraptions. TP was my second favorite. OOT, being my first game, was more inspirational than anything. whati kinda didnt like about TP was that there was no insturment that allowed the player to make your own notes. The wolf link dosent count. 3 notes dosent qualify as an insturment |

The trouble is that the Ocarina in Ocarina Of Time was pretty much essential to the story, and thus had to have significant substance to using it and playing it. Even the Wind Waker in same name game (lol) only had a few different directions and speed changes, again crucial to the story. Twilight Princess focused on other elements in the game, like the Twilight and removing it from Hyrule. Having another significant instrument would have only divided the focus further, and served no real purpose. At least they chose to encorporate some musical element into it with Wolf Link, Link's reeds etc. As for difficulty, Din's Fire's probably got it spot on. Overall TP probably was slightly easier than OOT, but it made up for it by being a bigger game, both in terms of map and sheer number of tasks. I personally believe the only reason people say their isn't as much person interaction is because the map, as I said, is bigger, so IN PROPORTION there aren't as many quests per square metre as Ocarina, so it seems diluted, but there are still just as many sidequests etc in TP, it just seems not. But even if it was slightly easier, for one as I said that means more people can enjoy and see it all as opposed to just those who were good enough to finish OOT, plus if you were to play TP first THEN OOT, you'd probably say OOT was no harder, except perhaps the Water Temple. |
